Some of our customers have raised questions about how to clean their backpacks. Questions like how do I clean the backpack? Will the charging port be damaged by water? What should I do if I want to do machine washing for the backpack? Are the charging port and the USB cable removable?
To address all of your concerns, here is a specific guide to help you correctly clean your backpack.
First, please follow the steps below to remove the USB cable:
① Find the place where the charging port is built inside.

② Hardly pinch the USB cable to the connector end and pull it up. (By this action you will see the USB cable is detached from the port)

③ Simply take it out through the hole.

For installing the USB connector back to the port:
① Simply put the connector back to where you took it out through the hole and move it to the place where the charging port is built.
② Press it into the charging port, you can feel it if it fits in the right place. (You may hear a slight 'click' sound which means it has perfectly fit to the port and your reinstallation is done)
Now that you've successfully removed the USB cable from your MATEIN backpack, you’re ready to give it a good clean.
There are two main ways to clean your backpack: spot cleaning and deep cleaning (hand washing or machine washing).
① Spot Cleaning (Recommended for Light Dirt or Stains)
Best for: Quick clean-ups, small stains, dusty areas.
You’ll need:
-
Mild detergent (no more than 2-3% active cleaning agents)
-
Soft cloth or sponge
-
Cold or lukewarm water
Instructions:
-
Mix a small amount of detergent with water.
-
Dip the cloth or sponge into the soapy water and gently rub the stained or dirty areas.
-
Rinse the spot with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
-
Let it air dry in a well-ventilated area—avoid direct sunlight.
② Hand Washing (Recommended for General Cleaning)
Best for: Deep refresh without risking machine wear.
You’ll need:
-
A sink, tub, or basin
-
Mild detergent (again, low chemical concentration)
-
Soft brush or cloth
Instructions:
-
Fill the tub or sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
-
Fully submerge the backpack and gently scrub the exterior and interior with a soft brush or cloth.
-
Focus on high-contact areas: shoulder straps, back panel, bottom, and compartments.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all detergent is removed.
-
Squeeze out excess water gently—do not wring or twist the backpack.
-
Hang it upside down in a shaded area to air dry naturally.
③ Machine Washing (Only If the Label Allows)
Some MATEIN backpacks can handle a gentle machine wash—but check the care label first.
You’ll need:
-
A laundry bag or pillowcase (to protect the backpack)
-
Mild detergent
-
Gentle cycle + cold water
Instructions:
-
Place the empty backpack in a laundry bag or pillowcase.
-
Use the delicate or hand-wash cycle with cold water.
-
Avoid spin cycles—these may damage the backpack’s structure.
-
After the wash, remove the backpack immediately and air dry in a shaded, ventilated area.
❌ What to Avoid
To protect the backpack’s material, zippers, and built-in features, avoid the following:
-
Harsh chemicals like bleach, acetone, alcohol-based cleaners
-
Hot water (it can warp the fabric and damage coatings)
-
Fabric softener (may leave residue or weaken water-resistant finishes)
-
Dryer or direct sunlight (can cause fading or deform the shape)
-
Ironing (most backpacks are heat-sensitive)
🛡️ Backpack Care Tips to Extend Longevity
Keeping your backpack clean is only one part of the maintenance. Here are a few extra tips to ensure it lasts for years:
-
Empty it regularly. Don't let food, liquids, or damp clothes sit inside.
-
Store in a dry, cool place. Humidity can cause mold or mildew.
-
Avoid overstuffing. This strains zippers and seams.
-
Use a rain cover or put electronics inside sealed bags in wet conditions—even though the backpack is water-resistant, it’s not 100% waterproof.
-
Clean it seasonally or after heavy use, such as hiking or travel.
*Please kindly note: our backpack allows machine-wash when without the USB cable, but frequent machine-wash is not advised as it could undermine the work life of your backpack. So keep your backpack tidy and clean in daily use is the best way of maintenance.
A clean backpack doesn’t just look better—it performs better and lasts longer. With proper care and regular cleaning, your MATEIN backpack will continue to be your reliable companion for commuting, school, travel, and beyond.

Thank you. I’m getting mixed answers on whether the cable need to be removed fro carry on luggage at airport security. Some say it’s allowed, some say it isn’t.
