On August 16, 2025, the Progressive Fishing Association (PFA) welcomed more than 170 young anglers and their families to its annual Youth Fishing Derby at a scenic 7-acre lake in Whitehouse, Ohio. MATEIN was proud to support the event by donating 10 premium bags and a $500 gift card, helping inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
A Day Full of Excitement
From early morning, children lined the shore with fishing poles in hand, their faces lit with anticipation. Volunteers from the PFA guided them on baiting hooks, casting techniques, and basic fishing etiquette.
“I think I’ve got one!” shouted an eager 9-year-old, as a small bluegill tugged at her line. Nearby parents cheered and encouraged their children, sharing in the excitement. The Youth Fishing Derby isn’t just about catching fish—it’s about building confidence, patience, and an appreciation for nature. Jon McKenzie, chair of this year’s event and an 8-year PFA member, explained:
“Our goal is to give kids a hands-on experience outdoors. Whether they catch a fish or not, they leave with memories, skills, and a deeper respect for nature.”
Throughout the day, young anglers eagerly measured their catches, shared tips, and celebrated every success, no matter how small. Events like this help children form lasting connections to the outdoors, their peers, and supportive mentors.
