Step 1 Measuring the Screen
- Get a standard tape measure.Screens are usually measured in inches, although different areas choose the metric system rather than the British system. If necessary, you can convert the measurement results after the fact.
- Find your starting measurement point. The screen is measured diagonally, so your starting point will be the lower left or right corner of the screen. The measurement only considers the actual screen, not the shell, so start the measurement in the beginning corner of the visible part of the screen.
- Extend the tape measure diagonally.Remember that you measure only the visible part of the screen, not any shell. The screen was originally measured diagonally to make the size sound more impressive.
- Convert your size to one-tenth of an inch. Most retailers advertise on screens in tenths of an inch (15.3 inches, 17.1 inches, etc.), but most tape measures are labeled in tenths of an inch.
- Convert inches to centimeters if necessary. If you need to know the screen size in centimeters, but only in inches, multiply inches by 2.54 to find the size in centimeters.
Step 2 Measuring the Height
- Turn off the laptop screen.Laptop height is measured on a closed screen.
- Start the tape measure from the bottom of one of the sides. If the laptop tilts when turned off, measure the thickest part.

- Measure to the top of the closed screen.Laptops usually don't exceed two inches.
Step 3 Measuring the Width
