From June 13–23, 2025, the Wounded Warrior Umpire Academy (WWUA) welcomed veterans from across the United States to its annual 10-day summer camp. This unique program offers far more than professional umpire training—it creates a space where warriors can connect, share their journeys, and rediscover a sense of purpose after military service. Through baseball, participants build skills, confidence, and lifelong friendships, using the game as a bridge to healing and growth.
This year, MATEIN was honored to sponsor 30 backpacks for the veterans attending the camp. While we couldn’t be on-site, our backpacks were there every day—carrying essential gear, holding personal items, and hopefully adding a touch of convenience to each participant’s experience. The event photos we received radiated energy and camaraderie: veterans laughing together, working as a team on the field, and embracing the challenges of learning a new craft.
The WWUA team, made up entirely of volunteers, provides everything from meals and lodging to equipment and training at no cost to the participants. It is a mission fueled by generosity and belief in the resilience of those who have served. Being able to contribute, even in a small way, reminded us of the power of community and the importance of standing behind those who give so much.
